Enable USB Port on LG TV

This may not be the correct thread but this is kinda neat.
I just picked up a 47 inch LG LCD tv (47LH30 Model)
It has a USB port on the back. It says Service only. It didn't do anything when I put a drive into it.
I did some reading and was able to enable it. I now can play mp3, jpegs, (from thumb drive and sd card in cheap card reader) and varius video formats. It now should play avi,mpg,mpeg,mp4,divx,xvid mkv and even ts files.
I have only played divx so far. It doesn't want to recognize the WD 500 gb hardrive yet. My Sonicview recorded many movies in ts format. Anyway ..here's how ...
1. Press the enter(OK) on the remote and the TV at the same time...hold for about 5 seconds
2. Password - 0000
3. Go to tool option 3
4. Change Jpeg to 1
5. Change Divx to SD or HD(Mine was SD)
6. Exit and try it out.
You will notice that now there are 8 inputs in the option list instead of 6 - Including a USB input.
This works on many LG models big and small.

that does not work for mine. i have 42 in with the usb already enabled for (media host) its for pictures and mp3, i would like to play movies via thumb drive with avi or mkv divix etc. maybe you can help. or is there a forum for lg tv's thanks.

....It keeps telling folks to not bother unless it is a European model. ...Mine was purchased from Sears down the block in Saskatchewan......this is as far from European as you can get...it worked on mine....I didn't downgrade the Firmware...for sure 3.15 works....I'm sure that mine is 4.05...this would be the newest..and it still was enabled with the hidden menu.....Check it out.

I'm not sure but it seems that that model can get the USB to work.

It may be one that cannot be enabled but I doubt it. Whatever you do..don't change the firmware. That could brick your set. I haven't been playing with mine for a while as I play through the USB port on the Home Theater instead. That's what it was made for. Still doesn't play mkv files though. They lied in the tech specs.

ok i tried with my lg ,i was told some just cant do it . fckn with the firm ware probably voids warranty. best solution western digital has wdtv adapter plugs into audio video in on tv ,plays movies jpeg, mpeg, mp3 hdmi ,mpeg4 ,simplay hd hd1080p, it also can conect with hdmi cable to tv for hi def .and also hook up to external hard drive .i hear there is a new one out, that connects to your hub, to take movies off your computer hard drive

honestly for $1188 at visions in canada they had an 47LX6500, that is a 240hz, 3dTV, LED, HDMI, DLNA complaint, USB (dual), HDMI (3x/4x) TV. works great.
supports DIVX<SD<HD, mkv, etc etc.very nice, and open source firmware work is being done. Wireless and Wired network support.
