There was also an electric motorcycle eating up the drag circuits using DC series motors. In a nut shell, using the properties of electricity and pyhisics, a DC series motor will have infinite torque at stall (start up), and as long as voltage is applied will continue to increase in RPM to infinity, with the only limiting factors being the physical make up of the machine itself. Diesel electric locomotives use these principles and that is why they need overspeed protectors, and current limiters for the electric motors. If a shaft were to break, thus eliminating the load on the motor, its RPMs would increase till it literally flew apart.
also, current limiters are required on start up to stop electrical overloads related to the infinite torque principle.
All of the above make for an awesome short distrance drag race machine, but with a very high maintenance requirement.
This type of machine would be totally unsuitable for every day use.
