Ok folks i need your recommendations... gunna get an LCD hopefully in the 40 to 50 inch range (that's probably a pipe dream though). But I'm getting fed up trying to figure out which will give me the best bang for the buck... plus i think they may be changing the specifications for contrast now (no doubt just to scramble my brain more). Any recommendations on which one i should look at?

Helllo. I just went through an exhaustive search for a TV.

LCD:
I didn't like the Samsung 650, 750 because they have too reflective of a screen. I thought the Samsung 630 (which is semi-matte) didn't have nearly as good black levels.

Plasma:
The Panasonic 800U model is THX certified, great color accuracy without as much need for calibration. The 24p / 48 hz mode causes flicker. I love the viewing angles of Plasmas, but the whites look dirtier and not as much "pop" as LCDs. I like the Pioneer 5020FD plasma, which has an effective 24p / 72 hz mode, but it was rather expensive. The Plasmas tend to be more reflective also, use more electricity, and weigh more. Burn-in is possible, but this problem has been largely mitigated in recent models. It's recommended you go through a break-in cycle. Mostly you will just see short term image retention, not burn-in. I believe both of these plasmas are available in 50" rather than 52".

My Choice: LCD
I liked the Sony W4100 and XBR6, which have semi-matte screens, 120 hz & motion smoothing. The 120 hz allows proper cadence of 24p playback just as the 48 hz and 72 hz modes of the Plasmas mentioned. You can also enable motion smoothing, which interpolates an extra frame between existing frames. When enabled, it not only provides a smoother motion during playback, but improves motion resolution. Black levels are excellent on these two, better with the XBR6, and exceed that of some plasmas. I read a couple things about the Z4100 that concerned me, so I just looked for a deal on the W4100 or XBR6, and finally went with the W4100. I'm very happy with the picture, and I saved about $800 vs the XBR6. If the XBR6 had been $400 less, I probably would have gone ahead and gone with that. Prices have dropped recently. It certainly shouldn't hurt to wait a while longer. Sony makes an XBR8, which is LED backlit. It's way up there in price. this was posted by a member here..................

Over the holidays my wife and I bought an LG 32" LCD for our bedroom, we bought a 52" Sharp Aquios for the living room, yeserday I bought a Nevineo HD. Both these tv's are perfect for us, like was said above the LCD has a non reflective screen, we need that with all the large windows in our house. We also have the sonicview 800HD but I haven't yet put up my 129 dish. I just got back from buying a Samsung DVD recorder and a Toshiba DVD recorder, gonna try them out later today. The LCD TV seems to work really well in a well lit room even the window behind my couch doesn't show in the screen. My brothers both have Plasma and that is one of their complaints is reflection. Hope some of this helps.

I currently use a cheaper hi def plasma, and if I were to buy a new one it would still be a plasma all the way. If you watch a lot of sports like i do (hockey, football), then the plasma is the way to go. I don't care what anybody says about refresh rates on the new lcd's, you still see the annoying tails and streaks in fast moving action. My brother has a top of the line Sharp, and I still prefer my cheap ass plasma for sports. Glare is plasma's Achilles heal so a dark room or one without windows will help a lot. If money were no object, then Pioneer is the brand to go with. Panasonic is a close second, and now the newer plasmas come in 1080p. From the lcd standpoint, Sharp appears to be the leader. Good luck on what you decide.:D

thanks for the input folks, it helps big time! I have a rear projection Toshiba now and about 5 years old and the ruddy thing is dieing for some reason (never had bad luck with a toshiba before but this one isn't holding up well). I've been "ordered" to purchase an Lcd so i'm stuck with that as the target (so the plasma and rear projection machines are out of my target area i'm afraid).

So essentially it sounds like i should look into a 120Hz unit with a non-reflective screen. It sounds like I don't have to worry about the contrast specifications (the 1:500000000 type of sheet)? That's a relief because those numbers were starting to really bug me.

That info really cuts down my work load folks and is really appreciated! Thanks!

If you dont want to spend the most to get the newest tech.. I have a LCD 47 viewsonic 1080p but its the older ( few months old) 60hz.. I am pretty happy with it when combined with a true 1080 p hd reciever it is sharp and crisp...best of all it was only 999 cdn at co stco.. I like viewsonic.. if you have to look atta a monitor all day long there are a lot worse choices out there.. I think the refresh rate is like 6 ms too :)

i have a toshiba 61" in the livingroom...8yrs and no problems so far

also a lot of Rear proj screens just have bulbs that wear out . they are facny bulbs of course , they use a mercury or metal halide bulb - may be able to replace e, if its just a dim picture

that what i thought when it started to darken about a year ago, but it turned out to be the main input circuit board (it had alot of fritzing capacitors) ... $300.00 repair  I have to re-align the canons alot too (so it's breasts must be starting to sag) and i'm sure the bulb is going too at this point. I don't get it, i must have purchase a 'monday morning robot hangover' unit.

I will look into the machine you linked to V, thanks! But there's a good example of confusion for me... where do you see the 60hz info? Actually i can't even spot the contrast numbers in there either (but i don't have to worry about that anymore), but where is the 60hz vs 120hz specification info on all those units (Toshiba, Sony, etc). Is it listed as the video input signal?

In the spec's on all TV's its called the refresh rate, 120 is the newest and best so far.

Must be old stock they're trying to get rid of, only has 60hz refresh rate all current LCD's have the 120 hz, much better during fast scenes such as hockey, nascar, skiing, and such.

just go to the retailer of your choice and spend time comparing the picture. thats all i do and pick out the one i like. all in all that is all that matters not the all feature crap that you not use anyway.

i hear ya Harsh, but i need it starting point. I was concentrating on the contrast numbers then they started to change the parameters, so i started to give up. Didn't even realize i should have been looking at the 60 vs 120 numbers :o Also, don't Sharp & Toshiba make 90% of all the screens out there... or am i wrong on that one too?

one thing i have noticed with pretty much all the TV advertisments out there, is, if it is a 120 Hz refresh Model - they will be hawking that feature in theie adds in big letters - otherwise it prolly isnt a 120Hz.

Same goes for relolution - See lots of adds still for HD TVs plasma and LCD, and if the add doesnt say in big letters "1080P" , pretty much 10 times of of 10 - its only a 720P TV

i would say it does- More is better to a point - sharp or someone made a million to one contrast ratio unit for proffessional use only - No retail on sale. - Reason: Movie companies wanted a flat panel that could be seen outdoors on a sunny day on location for reviewing movie shoots on site.

Sooooooooo - unless yer gonna set up outside on a sunny day - I'd be happy with 8 or 10K to 1. - Dont think 20K to 1 would be required for indoor applications -lol

right on Zack - make sure you get an optical audio cable for that system man - the sound will blow your socks off, Ultra has the optical jack in the back - but dont spend more that 25 bucks for one - they all the same

took the plunge.... Toshiba Regza 42" 1080p 120Hz Flat-Panel LCD HDTV (42XV545U) came with a Pioneer theater system (HTP-3990)... $1500 total. Yeah i know, kinda went from high to a mid range system... but the wallet & starvation diet made the ultimate decision...enjoy the new setup zack...............cheers
