Boot or standby?

I have been helping a buddy with his 650. I have been loading his box with my old laptop. His computer don't have a serial port so he ordered a usb to serial adapter.Can I load files with the adapter in boot mode or does it have to be in standby. If I have to use standby how do I get it in standby mode? I have always loaded them in boot mode.

has to be standby for a usb adapter
to put cw in standby simply hit the power button on remote, you will get --:-- or time displaying

Thanks.....So if I get the time dispay then it is in standby? I always thought that it had to have --:-- for standby.....Learn something new everyday :)

Ok we got the new usb to serial adapter. Loaded drivers for vista and plugged er in. Computer installed adapter and set it on com 5......everything going great....open loader 1.02 for the 650 and verify file...set er on com 5 hit start..nothing happened... tried this several times with same results...what am I doing wrong????

the boot mode for this box is used for other reasons if you put the program with (---.---)is mush better.later im goin to give you 4method to fix thi box
