UGS Solid Edge v20
The best just got better. The latest version of Solid Edge provides better collaboration tools, better massive assemblies for plant equipment design and better productivity. No other system in the mid-market can offer the value like Solid Edge. We are you to compare!
Solid Edge is powerful 3D CAD software that allows manufacturing companies to transform their process of innovation and achieve competitive advantage.
A fundamental component of the UGS Velocity Series portfolio, Solid Edge delivers an exceptional return on investment for a low total cost of ownership. With a unique 4-step process for evolving to the productive world of 3D, superior core modeling, embedded design management, built in finite element analysis, and process workflows, Solid Edge delivers the benefits of a fully integrated and managed design discipline that eases the growing complexity of product design.
Solid Edge is built on a foundation of superior core modeling and process workflows that help engineers design more rapidly by modeling parts more efficiently than other CAD systems. Solid Edge harnesses the power of Parasolid - the modeling kernel owned and developed by UGS and, at more than a million licensed seats, the de-facto standard for 3D mechanical CAD.
Solid Edge is the only mainstream mechanical system that merges design management capabilities with the CAD tools that designers use every day. Solid Edge customers have a choice of scalable product data management solutions that manage designs as quickly as they are created. Practical tools for managed collaboration help to better coordinate design team activities and remove the errors that result from miscommunication. Product and process complexity is a growing concern for manufacturing organizations. Thousands of companies around the world have come to rely on Solid Edge to battle this increasing complexity head-on.
UGS Launches Solid Edge Version 20, extending reach further into Plant Equipment Design Core CAD Product of the UGS Velocity Series Delivers Increased Engineering Productivity and Design Collaboration for Mid-Sized CompaniesFOR RELEASE Thursday, May 3, 2007
PLANO, Texas – UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced Version 20 of Solid Edge® software, its industry-leading, 3D computer-aided design (CAD) solution. With hundreds of enhancements, the new version delivers key functionality for plant equipment design as well as increases engineering productivity and design collaboration across the entire global value chain.
Solid Edge V20 is the latest release of UGS’ hybrid 2D/3D CAD software and the premier design-centric solution in the mid-range CAD industry. Solid Edge is the CAD component of the UGS Velocity Series portfolio targeted specifically at the needs of mid-sized manufacturing companies.
“Solid Edge V20 delivers substantial increases in engineering productivity through many industry firsts,” says Dan Staples, director, Solid Edge Business. “For example, V20’s 2D goal seeking technology breaks new ground in the CAD industry, while the addition of zones to our assembly modeler is a first for mid-range CAD. This opens up many new possibilities for design optimization in plant equipment design and shop floor layout. We also continue to improve design collaboration through tight integration with Teamcenter Express for cPDM.”
Massive assembly capabilities broaden footprint in Plant Equipment Design market.
Companies such as Siemens VAI Clecim, Anglo Platinum and Krones use Solid Edge’s leading advanced assembly design capabilities to layout their factory floors and plant equipment, which often have assemblies of more than 100,000 parts. Solid Edge V20 takes the next step to making it even easier to layout factory floors with actual machine geometry, as well as deal with other large assemblies in industries like heavy industrial vehicles, large mechanical machinery, and process and power by becoming the first mid-range modeler to add assembly zones for massive assembly design. In addition, Solid Edge continues its 64-bit architecture development with more applications available, as well as improved performance, which aid users working with massive assemblies.
The German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) is o*ne of the leading accelerator centers in the world. “Typical assembly size that we use in our daily work consists of about 5000 parts, the largest assemblies being between 30,000 and 50,000 parts,” said Josef Gonschior, design engineer, DESY (Germany). “The advantage of the new Zone command in Solid Edge V20 provides is a targeted separation of the working area and better performance due to less geometry. As a result, we are able to work with several developers o*n even bigger assemblies. The Zone command gives us the insight in adjacent assemblies that are used by others.”
Design collaboration across the value chain to support PLM
Solid Edge V20 improves supply chain collaboration through integration with the new Teamcenter Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). This allows improved access to the central database from remote locations via wide area networks. A new “Auto-constrain in Assembly” feature adds parametric intelligence to imported data regardless of origin or translation method. In addition, a new dynamic reviewing capability for direct editing provides real-time feedback when editing imported models.
Solid Edge V20 also introduces new translators to help users transition from AutoCAD to Solid Edge, collaborate with Catia V5, and read the STL file format for easy file sharing with a variety of systems.
Hatch (Mississauga, o*ntario, Canada) has been serving the mining and metals, energy and infrastructure markets for more than 50 years and in 80 countries. “Design collaboration within our organization and outward to our suppliers and clients is always a challenge,” said John Matthews, mechanical designer, Hatch. “By using Solid Edge, we have been able to streamline our communication to complete our projects more efficiently. For example, we used Solid Edge to design six different Coilbox designs for customers in Korea, Ukraine, China and the United Kingdom. The original model was modified, improved and reused. With the new tools in Solid Edge V20, specifically the AutoCAD translation, we are able to communicate up and down our supply chain efficiently.”
Engineering enhancements increase productivity
Solid Edge V20 adds more than 170 enhancements to part design and drafting that drive further productivity gains, including:
* Goal Seeking to solve 2D engineering scenarios that are more easily express graphically than with equations in real time. Knowing the target value of an engineering calculation, goal seeking allows users to set certain parameters, while the system varies other factors to achieve the desired result. Results can be used to drive 3D geometry in a true hybrid 2D/3D design environment.
* Advanced Feature Libraries, including Part Feature grouping to streamlines reuse of common features.
* Tabulated drawings to create a single drawing for an entire family of parts.

Thank Jaegar Croft for Solid Edge v20 .
but i have an installation problem. i would be glad if you could help out.
Well I finally downloaded all the files from rapidshare and unzipped to an ISO. No errors while unzipping, created ISO fine. However when I try to run it it errors out "DemoShield Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
AppName: demo32.exe AppVer: 8.0.100.1040 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000c0100
Don't know what all this means other than maybe its corrupt some how?
Let me know how you made out.

Hey Mirage, I had a quick look around and apparently there maybe an issue between QuickTime and DemoShield... do you have QuickTime installed? If so, try uninstalling Quicktime and then try to install Solid Edge. You can always reinstall QuickTime afterwards...

Hi, Has anyone tried to install Solid Edge on Windows 7?
In my case the installation runs fine until it is removing the installation files.
At the end it get stock and the installation has to be aborted, which makes the windows installer to remove all files :-(
Thanks

rezashah, sorry about the delay getting back to you...:o
ok, i had to download Solid Edge from a torrent cuz the rapid thing was taking too long... but i think i got the same version as you did, only mine didn't have a license for it.. :(
anyway, i was able to load the thing but man it took a long time (i'm running 7 as a virtual machine though). At the end, when it said 'cleaning up installation files' (or something like that), it sat there ... i left it sitting there for about 2 hours... then i gave up and used the Task Manager to end it. The program apparently loaded but i couldn't open the stupid thing cuz i never has a license to insert during the installation...
all that to say, are you able to get to that point (where it simply sits there trying to clean up the installation)? Or does it tank out and uninstall itself automatically. If you get to where it's freezing, don't cancel the installation, leave it for a while, then use the Task Manager to end it... see if that does any good...
let me know rezashah and i will see what else i can figure out for ya...

Hi Zack,
Thanks for your help.
Well what you experienced, is exactly what happened to me. It does not remove all files and just stops. Then I did the same as you did, kill the process. But when you reboot the system and want to start the program again, then it has disappeared.
Maybe you can check that now. I can send you a licence file if you like.

i hate to do this to you but the app is still here.. mind you i still get the licensing request window and the app will not load until i install a license, but Solid Edge appears to be available for use
Rezashah is it possible that it doesn't like the license you installed and it's gone into some sort of 'protection mode'? (i'm guessing)
I should say, just in case, i'm using Win7 build 7000.
It appears to be ready go though...

hi zack, well I am also using Win7/7000, I think your version remains because you do not have the licence. In my case if I do not install/copy the licence file (MAGNiTUDE) the program is available after reboot.
After installing (and killing the process when it hangs at deleting) and copying the licenec file to the proper folder, I can start the program and use it. But after the first reboot it suddenly disappears. The same happens with SolidEdge ST

that's sounds like a licensing thing... maybe i know about that particular license and doesn't like it... could that be it? I'll see if i can find another license for it, see it that cures it... sound good?

maybe ... thanks for your help ... I'll try other files

thanks .... I'll try it and let you know.
Do you have any experience with Solid Edge ST? It seems to be a newer version, but still very similar.
Zack1990
02-08-2009, 01:13 PM
i'm afraid it don't ... i've never used it
give one sec, i'm just rebooting the machine now to see if it accepts the license and i'll let ya know...

k, it seems to work here... did a full shut down and rebooted and the app is loading up ... :)

Problem still exists ..... I also tried Solid Edge ST from Shooters :-(( same problem.
Probably there is something in my system doing this on purpose:rolleyes:

it could be that 7 is being an ass about rezashah but there maybe a lot of variations in the app... we downloaded different versions of the app that's fir shir... the one i'm using came from here (torrent), if you want to try it....

02-08-2009, 02:15 PM
sorry about this rezashah, it's a 2.77gig sucker (as you probably already know)... and it gave me the same 'faulty' installation as yours gave you  The license file that i uploaded here is the same one as in the torrent file i downloaded (i just didn't realize it was in there :new_all_c)

lol ... well ... so you have now the same problem :-P

02-08-2009, 06:19 PM
sorry about the delay, had to fix a leaky roof here
lol, yes and no, rezashah, the app does seem to work despite the stall during the cleanup... but now i'm starting the think that it might have to do with the fact that i didn't put the license in there during the initial part of the installation... not sure though, and to be honest, the app took so flippin long to install i thought i was installing an Adobe CS Master package  :) i'm not sure i want to do it again... lol
Let me know how it goes, it's certainly worth the try though as far as the licensing goes (cuz the one included with iso torrent seems to work ok)...

02-13-2009, 09:18 PM
well, thanks for your help.
I tried it again. v20 and ST both don't work with Win7, but they work with WinXP. What ever the reason is ... thanks alot for your help.

Well on Windows 7 it behaves very funny. After installation I could start and work with it. But after reboot of the system the software disappeared. It had uninstalled itself.
On Windows XP everything is ok.

Hi,
I have the same problem like lascamate 2 months ago. I try to open a file that was created in Solid Edge 18 in Solid Edge v20. However, there comes the announcement "cannot open file. this file was created using an academic licence". The only possibility is to press "OK" and nothing else. Can one handle this anyhow?
A lot of thanks

i had a look back and so the post you're referring to and that was some kinda flippin retard answer i sent back to lascamate (sorry about that lascamate)... :o
ok, it's tough to get answers on this app cuz siemens plays stuff close to the chest but, and i'm just guessing here because i haven't found a decent answer for you yet, is there an 'import' feature in the program... where you can important the file rather than 'opening' the file... is that possible and if so does it help at all? if it does, just as a word of caution, if you import it solidedge 20 might convert it permanently and you might not be able to open it in v18 after that... (still guessing here though)...
let us know...

03-20-2009, 03:31 PM
hi zack,
i've searched it through but did not found a possibility to import a file.
the only chance is to open it, but that leads to the error.
but thanks for your try
i try to get solid edge v18 with an academic license.
if you will find a solution let me know
ps: i was looking every day for an answer. today i switched to page 7 and saw that you already wrote 3 days ago^^

Hi,

I know that this thread is about SE v20.
But could u help me with SE v18 too ?
I need a running license for v18 academic.
Do you have one for me ?
Thanks anyway !
And sorry for writing in this thread.

no problem writing in the thread, that's what it's here for! i will look for a v18 license for you today.
i didn't have much luck trying to figure out how to do the swap between stuff in 18 and opening it in 20 but i'll continue looking into it.
(i'll post the v18 license right here in this thread..)
try this one... i'm also downloading another license (but it'll take a little longer) and i'll upload that one here too but for now see if this sucker works... let me know...

thx zack ! both licenses are accepted.
SE v18 works, but i still can't open parts or assemblies that were made in an academic version.
it is not possible to import files.
have you got a solution or an academic license ?
thanks again
Zack1990
03-23-2009, 01:46 PM
k... just i don't mess up here (cuz i do that sometimes) which version is the academic? the 18 or the 20? if it' the 20 i'll see if i can find another type of license for it that will make it a 'full' version. or is it the other way around, is the 18 version the 'academic' one and the 20 is the 'full' version?

weeks ago i worked with solid edge v18 (at work).
the files i have created during that time i have saved on a usb-stick.
now at home i wanted to take some screenshots of parts or get technical drawings. but i cant open the files.
until now i tried SE v20 & v18. in both versions the problem is that SE got this error "cannot open file. this file was created using an academic licence".
i think to solve the problem i need an academic licence.

If i get a licence for v20 or v18 doesnt matter.

sorry about the delay answering...
i don't have any good news for you... but i don't use the program so there could be a solution i'm unaware of. i looked around for related info about the issue and i couldn't find much, in fact it looked as though the two programs might as well be complete different in that folks asked the same question and got very little helpful hints from siemens...
the only solution we could come up with was to load the academic license into your commercial version and beat the problem that way... but transferring stuff from the academic to the commercial version seemed impossible (more precisely, i couldn't find any info on how to do it).
sorry about the crappy news (and the delay posting it)... if you do find a method of transferring the stuff please let us know.

hi solid18, sorry about the delay responding. as far as that key goes, that's a good question. i've looked around abit since i saw your post i'm having a hard time finding an alternate. i'll keep looking though.
what exactly happened to the program? did you try to open it one day and for no apparent reason it said you needed a new key... was it that sort of thing? or did you re-install it and it didn't like the key when you tried to use it again? any extra info you can provide might help to corner and cure the situation.. thanks solid18

hi Custode, very sorry about the long delay responding :o
if i'm not mistake (but i usually am :)), the original download that JC provided has the commercial version of solid edge and there should be a 'fix' in the download package that will take care of that particular installation. the other serial that i posted was for folks who had the academic version of the app (that serial will not work on the JC package as far as i know - the commercial and academic versions of solid edge are very different apparently).
see if the contents of JC's package has the stuff you need to reg the app... it should be in there though, JC is very thorough ;)

Hi Zack,
the problem is that Solid Edge says that the license key expired.
I think that they renew keys after a while, i have not reinstalled the programm.
If you should find a solution i'd be very glad.
Thank you in anticipation.
