I have found, what I believe may be an answer to multiple problems. Since it is so seldom that one can find a win / win situation, a win / win / win left me compelled to share it.
First let me outline the problems that this may address.
One, the cost of mailing through the post office is becoming ridiculous. With the advent of e-mail, the post office's revenues have steadily declined. With each new contract, postal workers get shorted more and more in comparison to the cost of living, with the consequences being further increases in postal fees. A vicious circle.
Two, our environment is being destroyed by massive amounts of landfill. Everyday we are forced to dispose of more and more useless debris, which is increasing the costs of refuse disposal. This results in a never ending increase in our taxes.
Three, the amount of unwanted and unappreciated solicitations in the mail has become enormous. In each and every week, I receive a minimum of ten offers of credit cards, and four offers of mortgages between my wife and myself. I have to pay to have this disposed of, see number two above.
My solution.
Take all of the paperwork out of offer A's envelope, dispose of the piece with your name on it, and put it in the post-paid envelope for offer B. Do likewise with the garbage from offer B to offer A. Complete this with each and every offer you receive that you didn't specifically request, and mail them back the following day.
How this helps.
First of all, maybe these idiots will start sending only to the people that request their services. They can pass the savings to their customers in the form of lowered interest. Second, they can pay for their own landfill and sanitation services, ending the non-stop increases in my taxes. And third, but not least, the increased use of the post offices services will give them a boost so they get a raise without increasing the price of stamps or having to "go postal". Of course the thought of seeing the receiving department of Citi-Bank open an offer from Washington Mutual and vice-versa is just icing on the cake.
Please join me in this grass-roots movement. We may make a difference. And if not, if there is anything illegal about doing this, at least I'll have somebody to talk to.
