help with factory reset please.

could someone please tell me the purpose of doing a factory reset. I have a coolsat 6100 and the 6000 and, have always did a factory reset after flashing them both with the latest files. but recently i noticed that if i didn't do a factory reset that they both worked the same. if it is necessary please tell me why especially if it will harm my boxes. simply put i am tired of having to reconfigure all of my settings after a factory reset. if this can be avoided please tell me how. Factory reset clears data....settings, channels, etc.
Not always necessary, usually only done when havin problems.
